Valhol is a grade 5 work for concert band. The piece is dedicated to Dangerfield’s son, who was deeply fascinated by their family history and the rich tapestry of ancestral Norse mythology.
The title refers to Valhol (more commonly known as Valhalla), the majestic, celestial hall of Viking lore where fallen warriors go to spend eternity alongside their ancestors. According to myth, entry into this Viking heaven required a heroic, honorable death in the heat of battle. Before crossing blades with the enemy, each warrior would recite a prayer, mentally preparing their spirit to face death with courage so they might be deemed worthy of Valhalla.
Structurally, the composition masterfully contrasts intense psychological stillness with brutal kinetic energy. The opening section captures the profound serenity, absolute focus, and internal resolve a warrior must embrace moments before combat. This calm quickly shatters as the piece transitions into a turbulent musical landscape, perfectly mimicking the fervor, chaos, and adrenaline of active warfare. Written for an expansive wind instrumentation — including full woodwinds, a robust brass section, piano, and driving percussion — Valhol stands as a thrilling, cinematic exploration of bravery and mythic sacrifice.
