Two Vestiges is a work for chamber orchestra that bridges physical architecture, visual art, and sonic landscape. Composed between 2009 and 2010, the piece earned the prestigious Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra Composition Prize in 2010. The overarching concept of a “vestige”—a trace or remnant of something that is vanishing or no longer exists—manifests throughout the work as the music captures fleeting states of permanence and impermanence.
The work is cast in two distinct movements, each serving as a sonic interpretation of a specific artistic or spatial design that Dangerfield encountered during his travels in Europe.
Movements
I.
Ribbon Sculpture
The opening movement draws inspiration from a striking, modern physical form—the work of artist Ursula Burghardt. Musically, this translates into fluid, intertwining lines across the ensemble, with instrumental textures weaving together like ribbons of sound. The architecture of this movement balances geometric precision with a sense of continuous, sweeping motion, leaving structural “traces” as the lines collide and dissolve.
II.
Japanese Garden (karesansui)
The second movement pivots to a space designed entirely for meditation and stillness: the karesansui, or traditional Japanese dry landscape garden. Here, Dangerfield constructs an environment of intense focus and quiet gravity. Rippling patterns in the winds and strings mimic the raked gravel of a Zen garden, while stark solo colors stand like timeless stone monoliths amidst a sea of silence. The music demands a deliberate slowing of perception, transforming acoustic space into a canvas of memory and quiet contemplation.
