What does historic transformation sound like? This central inquiry drove pianist Ann DuHamel to invite a select group of contemporary composers to construct new works rooted firmly in the style, materials, or structural philosophies of Johannes Brahms. Joseph Dangerfield’s contribution, Postcards, answers this call through a collaborative, dialogic framework that pays homage to the historical letter exchanges between Brahms, the virtuoso violinist Joseph Joachim, and Clara Schumann.
To build the work, Dangerfield entered a creative relay with fellow composer Luke Dahn. Dangerfield composed an initial core movement entitled “The Mountains are Vast” and dispatched it to Dahn, who responded with a short musical movement of his own. This back-and-forth process mimics the intimate epistolary dynamics that Brahms used when fine-tuning masterpieces like his Violin Concerto. Each of Dangerfield’s short movements functions as an independent “postcard” built upon an expressive nucleus—either a literal melodic snippet or a specific structural process favored by Brahms. The resulting suite balances historical reverence with contemporary reimagining. The movements are flexible and can be performed together in sequence, presented as individual standalone pieces, or strategically interspersed throughout an entire recital program.
