Moon Phase is an eleven-minute exploration of texture, shadow, and cosmic architecture. Composed in 2018 for the unique sonic landscape of the flute (doubling alto flute), cello, and piano, the work operates as a continuous, cyclical narrative that traces the physical and symbolic progression of the lunar cycle.
Structurally, the piece is designed to mirror the trajectory of a celestial body moving from darkness into blinding illumination, and back again. Moon Phase opens in a state of absolute stillness, evoking the invisible presence of a “New Moon.” Here, Dangerfield relies on fragile, unpitched sounds and microtonal inflections, forcing the audience to listen past the silence. As the piece progresses into its “Waxing” phase, the music gathers rhythmic momentum and density. Fragmented gestures from the three instruments gradually coalesce, building toward a highly synchronized, resonant climax that represents the “Full Moon.” This architectural peak gives way to a mirror-image “Waning” section, ultimately dissolving back into the quiet vacuum of space from which it emerged.
To capture the stark, otherworldly atmosphere of the night sky, Dangerfield utilizes a rich palette of extended instrumental techniques. The flute introduces breath-based colors through jet whistles, key clicks, and whisper tones, creating a chilling sonic wind. The cello acts as a taut, structural anchor, utilizing sul ponticello (bowing near the bridge) to produce glassy, metallic harmonics. Meanwhile, the pianist is instructed to play both on the keyboard and directly on the internal strings, using dampening and glissandi to evoke a cratered, resonant landscape. Harmonically, the piece uses sharp, semitone dissonances to create a sense of “auditory shadow”—when one instrument establishes a pure, luminous tone, another enters just a half-step away, aurally eclipsing the light of the pitch. The result is an intimate yet expansive chamber work that transforms astronomical physics into a hauntingly poetic sensory experience.
